TruSculpt iD and TruSculpt Flex: The Optimal Treatment Pair for the Best Body Composition

The current demand for safe, non-invasive, and effective fat removal procedures that promote body contouring is consistently increasing. The global body contouring market reached $6.1 billion in 2018 and is expected to grow exponentially through 20241. Although this market projection is staggering, patients have consistently reported that they want to lose fat and gain muscle in the process, which emphasizes the need for non-invasive fat reduction and muscle toning devices. Pairing two technologies from Cutera: truSculpt® iD to permanent eliminate fat; and truSculpt® flex to strengthen, firm and tone muscles, provides a novel treatment approach that makes it possible for patients to have both the personalized contouring and the definition they desire. A recent clinical study indicates that pairing of truSculpt iD and truSculpt flex provide patients with positive outcomes such as fat reduction, decreased belly fat, enhanced muscle tone, increased muscle mass, improved muscle sculpting, and heightened body sculpting.2 truSculpt iD is a radiofrequency (RF) device designed to induce fat apoptosis in unwanted fat bulges or pockets2,3. The device provides hands-free operation and is comprised of 6 hands-free, and two hand-held handpieces that deliver RF energy from the epidermis to adipose tissue. Furthermore, the handpieces are temperature-controlled, allowing for deep volumetric heating of the epidermis without damaging the tissue. truSculpt iD achieves this outcome by maintaining a skin surface temperature between 43°C and 44°C while heating adipose tissue to 47°C - 48°C. At these temperatures, one 15-minute procedure effectively destroys adipose cells and produces an average reduction in fat thickness of 24% a with a single 15-minutes treatment protocol3,4. The degree of fat reduction increases with additional treatments, and maximum results are usually observed within 12 weeks.3 After the initiation of the fat reduction process with truSculpt iD, patients underwent truSculpt flex treatment in order to achieve muscle sculpting.3  truSculpt flex induces direct bio-electrical muscle stimulation that leads to the development of a firmer abdomen, buttocks, and thighs. More specifically, the handpieces deliver up to 30 mA of electrical current directly to the targeted muscles, which stimulates multidirectional contractions. Changing the polarity of the electrodes allows for different types of torsional contractions of the muscles. truSculpt flex is comprised of 16 handpieces, and in comparison, to other muscle toning devices currently on the market, truSculpt flex targets the largest surface area per 45 minute-treatment session than any other muscle sculpting device on the market.3 Furthermore, the device can simultaneously treat up to eight body areas at varying intensities by using specialized muscle sculpting modes called PrepTone, and Sculpt. Prep mode uses sinusoidal currents to induce deep muscle contractions that warm-up, stretch, and gradually build up a tolerance to muscle contractions. The Tone mode delivers three integrated waveforms to stimulate continuous muscle activation that increases strength and endurance. The Sculpt mode entails the use of a unique waveform that sequentially contracts muscles in order to increase the basal metabolic rate and stimulate new muscle fiber development. Amy Taub, MD., found success in pairing these two treatments in her patients. The treatment protocol Dr. Taub followed was to treat patients with one truSculpt iD for abdominal fat, and three months post one truSculpt iD treatment, she followed up with truSculpt flex protocols. Each patient received 2 truSculpt flex treatments on each of the Prep, Tone and Sculpt modes, working up to exceed 40 to 50% intensity. Results were assessed with digital photos at baseline, 12 weeks following the truSculpt iD treatment, and again one month after the last treatment with truSculpt flex. The results were dramatic, as seen in Figure 1 and Figure 2. Fat thickness reduction

Figure 1: Top photos from left to right--baseline, 3 months following truSculpt iD, 1-month post 6 treatments with truSculpt flex (4 months total from baseline). On bottom, ultrasound photos showing fat thickness at baseline (3.47 cm) and after truSculpt flex (2.27 cm), translating to a 12 mm or 35% fat thickness reduction.

According to Dr. Neil Sadick, the founder and president of Sadick Dermatology,
We can now offer a complete body sculpting solution in a single treatment protocol. With truSculpt iD radio frequency for fat reduction, and truSculpt flex bioelectric stimulation for muscle toning, the results are comprehensive body contouring.
Indeed, the utilization of truSculpt iD and truSculpt flex not only promotes fat reduction, but also initiates the muscle sculpting process, which makes it easier for patients to see impressive results with diet and exercise alone. Therefore, these two synergistic and complementary devices encourage complete body sculpting, support building muscle, and enhanced satisfaction for patients.3   Sources 1. https://www.researchandmarkets.com/r/cayxa9 2.
